Richmond Hill Property Tax, Additional Residential Units and Business Licences

What to know, from the official pages named on each card. We last checked them on October 29, 2026.

Richmond Hill property tax: the City keeps about 28% of your bill

Richmond Hill mails an interim bill in January, based on 50% of the previous year's annualized taxes and shown as a reduction on the final bill, with instalments due in March and May. In 2026 the final instalments were due August 4 and October 1. The City's own taxes are only about 28% of the bill, and the rest is collected for York Region and the Province of Ontario. A one-time 1.25% penalty is added on the first day of default, followed by 1.25% interest each month until the taxes are paid.

Adding a unit to your Richmond Hill home

Richmond Hill allows up to three additional residential units on a lot in addition to the main home, with no more than four dwelling units in total and no more than two in an accessory building. The lot must be separately serviced by municipal sewage and drinking water, and a building permit with professionally prepared drawings is required. Inspections are booked at stages of construction, an occupancy permit follows, and a separate electrical permit comes from the Electrical Safety Authority. Rent from a unit belongs on your tax return, and we can help you report it.
