Frequently asked questions
Multiply the price before tax by the HST rate. In Ontario the rate is 13%, so a 100 dollar price has 13 dollars of HST and a total of 113 dollars. Choose "Add tax to a price" in the calculator, pick your province and enter the price.
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. In Ontario, divide by 1.13: a 113 dollar total is a 100 dollar price plus 13 dollars of HST. Choose "Remove tax from a total" in the calculator and it does this for you.
The harmonized sales tax (HST) rates are: New Brunswick 15%; Newfoundland and Labrador 15%; Nova Scotia 14%; Ontario 13%; Prince Edward Island 15%. Every other province and territory charges the 5% federal GST, and some add a provincial tax. The table on this page lists all 13.
British Columbia (PST 7%); Manitoba (RST 7%); Quebec (QST 9.975%); Saskatchewan (PST 6%). Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon charge only the 5% GST. The calculator shows the federal and provincial amounts on separate lines for these provinces.
GST is the 5% federal tax. HST combines the federal and provincial taxes into one rate in the provinces that use it, and the CRA collects it. PST (called RST in Manitoba and QST in Quebec) is a separate provincial tax with its own rules, collected by the province.
Not until you pass the small supplier limit: when your taxable sales go over 30,000 dollars in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive calendar quarters, you must register for GST/HST and start charging it. You may also register voluntarily. Some supplies, such as basic groceries, are zero-rated everywhere in Canada.
GST/HST registrants can usually claim input tax credits for the GST/HST they pay on things they buy for their business, which reduces the amount they send to the CRA. The rules depend on what you buy and how you use it, so ask us if you are not sure.
Zero-rated supplies, such as basic groceries, are taxable at 0%, so the seller can still claim input tax credits. Exempt supplies, such as most residential rent and many health and education services, are not taxed and the seller usually cannot claim credits. The calculator does not know what you are buying, so it always applies the general rate.
For GST/HST the rate generally depends on the place of supply, which is often where the customer is, not where you are. A sale shipped to an HST province can carry that province's HST. The rules have exceptions, so ask us before you set up your invoicing.
