Pickering Additional Dwelling Units, Property Tax and Tax Relief

What to know, from the official pages named on each card. We last checked them on October 29, 2026.

Additional dwelling units in Pickering must be registered

Registration of additional dwelling units is mandatory in Pickering under By-law 8040/23, and a home with one must be registered with both the Building Services and Fire Services departments. Registration cannot be completed until construction is finished and inspected by both Pickering Fire and Building Services inspectors, and a one-time registration fee is due at application. Up to two additional units are now permitted on most residential properties, including detached, semi-detached and townhouse dwellings. Rent from a unit belongs on your tax return, and we can help you report it.

Pickering property tax: four instalments a year, or twelve

Pickering's Due Date Instalment Plan withdraws four payments a year on the dates on your bill, two interim and two final, and its Monthly Payment Plan takes 12 withdrawals on the 1st, 8th or 16th of the month. A 1.25% penalty is added on the first day of default, and another 1.25% on the first day of each calendar month the taxes stay unpaid. Check your bill for the due dates, which change each year.

Pickering tax grant and deferral for low-income seniors and people with disabilities

For 2026 the City offers an annual property tax grant of $620 to low-income seniors aged 65 or older who receive or qualify for the GIS, and to people with a disability who receive or qualify for ODSP, as long as every registered owner qualifies and the home has been their principal residence for at least a year. You must reapply each year, and in 2026 the deadline was August 19. A separate deferral postpones the part of an assessment-related tax increase above the first 5% or $100, whichever is greater, and the deferred amount is a lien repaid when the property is sold or ownership changes. Registered charities on commercial or industrial property can apply for a 40% rebate.
