Milton Property Tax, Additional Residential Unit Registration and Business Licences

What to know, from the official pages named on each card. We last checked them on October 29, 2026.

Milton property tax: four instalments, with no cash accepted

Milton's 2026 instalments were due February 27, April 30, June 30 and September 29. The Town adds a penalty of 1.25% on the first day of default and another 1.25% on the first day of each following month. It offers pre-authorized plans (monthly end, monthly mid, semi-monthly and instalment), which you join through its Property Tax Portal. You can also pay through your bank, by cheque in the mail, at Town Hall by cheque or debit, or through your mortgage company. The Town does not accept cash for property tax, although you can pay cash at your financial institution. Follow the dates on your bill.

Every additional residential unit in Milton must be registered

All additional residential units (ARUs) in Milton must be registered with the Town, including new and existing units, and whether they are rented, used by family or empty. The registry launched in 2025 as a three-year pilot. After you apply and pay, a municipal law enforcement officer and a fire prevention officer inspect the unit, and a unit that passes receives a compliance certificate that lasts one year. Renewal is yearly and has no fee during the pilot. Rental income from the unit belongs on your income tax return, and we can help you report it.

Business licences and permits in Milton

The Town issues business licences, food truck licences, transient trader licences, vehicle-for-hire licences, short-term rental licences, sign permits, filming permits and noise exemption permits, and each has its own page with the steps. For a general business licence, the Town lists personal services such as hair, nails, tattooing, piercing and acupuncture, kennels and salvage yards. All business licences expire at the end of February each year, and a new or home-based business may need a certificate of occupancy before it applies. We can help you work out what applies to your business and keep its books.
