Cambridge Property Tax, Additional Residential Units and Business Licences

What to know, from the official pages named on each card. We last checked them on October 30, 2026.

Cambridge property tax: two bills, four instalments

Cambridge sends interim bills in late January, with instalments due on the first working days of March and May. Final bills go out in late May, with instalments due on the first working days of July and September. The City charges a 1.25% penalty on overdue taxes on the third day of default, and then adds another 1.25% interest on the first day of each month until the whole bill is paid. Your payment must reach the City's office by the due date to count as on time. The City offers several pre-authorized payment plans, and an instalment privilege can be withdrawn under certain conditions, which then brings a penalty or interest.

Cambridge allows up to two additional residential units on a lot

A lot with a single detached house, a semi-detached house or a townhouse may have up to two additional residential units, for three in total. Either up to two units sit in the main building plus one in a detached accessory structure, or up to three units sit in the main building. Each unit must be built under a building permit in line with the Ontario Building Code, and Building Services must approve occupancy. The zoning by-law's section 4.19 sets rules for setbacks, parking and entrances, and the City's Additional Residential Unit By-law is 23-077. If you rent a unit out, the rent is taxable income, and we can help you report it and track the related expenses.

Business licences in Cambridge, and what the City does not licence

The City licenses stationary businesses and some mobile businesses, such as restaurants, food trucks, barbershops and tattoo parlours. It does not currently license renovation, landscaping or cleaning contractors. Before you apply, your business must meet building, zoning and fire department requirements, and Waterloo Region Public Health approves some specialized businesses, including hair salons, aestheticians, food businesses, tattoo parlours and food vehicles. You also need a certificate of insurance showing at least 2 million dollars of commercial general liability that names the City as an additional insured. Cambridge business licences expire every year on March 31.
