Burlington Property Tax, Short-Term Accommodation Licence and Business Licences

What to know, from the official pages named on each card. We last checked them on October 29, 2026.

Burlington property tax: instalments, penalties and interest

Burlington issues the interim bill in January with two instalments, typically in the third weeks of February and April. In 2026 the final instalments were due June 23 and September 23. A penalty of 1.25% is added to the amount in default on the first day of default, and 1.25% interest is charged on the last day of each month on the outstanding balance. The City offers a pre-authorized 10-month plan with monthly withdrawals from January to October, and a Due Date plan that follows the instalments. It does not take credit cards directly, only through third-party processors. Follow the dates on your bill.

Short-term rentals in Burlington need a City licence

Since May 1, 2025 the Short-Term Accommodation By-law has required the property owner to hold a City licence for each short-term accommodation. Rentals are only allowed in the applicant's principal residence, are limited to 28 consecutive days per stay and 183 days a year, and the licence is renewed every year. A condo unit or apartment is eligible only if the condo board permits short-term rentals and gives written approval. Rental income also belongs on your income tax return, and we can help you report it.

Burlington's Business Licensing By-law 042-2008 covers car dealerships and repair garages, convenience stores and food sellers, restaurants, personal services such as hair, nails, tattooing and piercing, pawnbrokers, public halls and entertainment venues, fireworks sales and newspaper boxes. Most applications need a signed application form, a Zoning Clearance Certificate dated within 12 months, proof of your right to occupy the premises and your Ontario Business Registry information.
